British heavy metal legends SAXON produce a series of alternative takes on classic favorites to herald a worthy new entry to the Saxonian Institute of Metal on their new album, Unplugged and Strung Up.

 

There is always feral beauty in a raging beast...and with Unplugged and Strung Up,SAXON's selection of unique, fresh and adventurous interpretations of material previously heard only with raw heavy metal thunder, the point is triumphantly underscored.

 

Unplugged and Strung Up reveals layers and pieces previously dormant in many of the 14 classic SAXON songs chosen for this makeover, thanks to some ear-catching new arrangements and mixes. Recorded, mixed and mastered with Andy Sneap in Derbyshire, UK earlier this year, Biff and co. re-evaluated, re-worked and re-energized the towering likes of ‘The Eagle Has Landed’ and ‘Crusader’ by introducing orchestral dynamics to offer added dimension. ‘Frozen Rainbow’ from the band's 1979 debut, gets a stunning acoustic reprisal which transports it into a power ballad to be proud of, whilst ‘Red Star Falling’ soars and sweeps the emotions with its orchestrally-arranged dovetail.

WE THE KINGS LAUNCH INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN FOR THEIR FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM

 

September 26, 2013 – Fresh from their from a hugely successful 40-city U.S. headlining tour, WE THE KINGS today announced that they will begin work on their fourth, as-yet-untitled, studio album.  This time though there’s a twist:  the band chose to skip the label and instead engage directly with their fans with help from the massively popular Indiegogo crowdfunding platform.
          
“You guys [the fans] are the reason we’ve made it this far to begin with,” says lead guitarist Hunter Thomsen.  As singer Travis Clark continues:  “You can expect this to be the best album we've ever made, because there are no strings attached.  We are the ones deciding everything about this album and with your help we can truly make the best WTK album yet!”

 

The band will be offering a variety of perks for the fans that opt to contribute.  The perks range anywhere from digital delivery of the album 24 hours prior to release, to letting a fan record vocal tracks on the new album.

We The Kings dipped their feet into the life of a band without a label earlier this year when they self-released the song “Just Keep Breathing” direct to fans on iTunes. It saw immediate success as a Top Five iTunes track, a debut on the Billboard “Hot 100 Singles” chart, and first month sales of over 149,000.  “Just Keep Breathing” was subsequently followed up with two more successful direct-to-fan releases on iTunes, “Find You There” and “Any Other Way.”

 

“Things without a label, they’ve been...different.  It’s pretty much taken everything we possibly can to do anything & everything,” says Clark when asked about life without a label.  “We hope you’ll contribute as much as you can to help our dream of making our 4th studio album all by ourselves.”

THE OCEAN: Excerpt From The Pelagial DVD Now Playing

Today, Revolver Magazine is pleased to reveal an excerpt from THE OCEAN's Pelagial DVD. The dramaticDVD, which is being screened as live video projections during the band's currentPelagial world tour, is a conceptual movie by Craig Murray, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Converge, etc. This movie, which offers up a year's worth of meticulous shooting, cutting and editing, visualizes the journey into the depths and completes the holistic music and visual art project that defines the Pelagial concept. The film is inundated with spectacular oceanic footage, parts of which THE OCEAN's own Robin Staps, an avid scuba diver, filmed himself in Australia. In addition, Pelagial features a female protagonist (who ironically goes by the name "Arielle" in real life). The girl is seen enduring various stages of fear, lust, terror, pain and joy, as she sinks towards the inscrutable depths of the Hadopelagic zone at the end of the album, and metaphorically, deeper and deeper into the depths of her own psyche.

Comments Robin Staps: "The album concept follows two separate but related strains: One is the obvious journey from the surface towards the depths of the sea, crossing the five Pelagial depth zones. The second one is loosely based on Andrey Tarkowsky's movie Stalker, which is also a journey through zones, but an inward journey, form the surface into the depths of the human psyche, towards the origins of our wishes and desires. This is the central theme that the lyrics of the album are orbiting around. The Pelagial movie takes up themes from and makes reference to both of these conceptual strains, and fuzes them together, in an abstract, artistic way."

The Pelagial DVD comes with a 5:1 Dolby surround mix of the instrumental album and is currently only available along with the special limited edition acrylic box set versions of the album, which were released through the band's own Pelagic Records, on both CD and 4x10" vinyl formats, in April. These special acrylic boxes contained the CD digipak or the two vinyl gatefolds respectively; which were "buried" underneath five thick, silk-screen printed acrylic layers colored in different hues of transparent blue, again reflecting the individual pelagic depth zones. The vinyl box sets sold out within nine days in February 2013, by direct preorder only. A second edition, including a repress of the vinyl on three-color split wax, will be made available for preorder shortly, and released in December through Pelagic Records.
